Things iDon’t Understand

There are a lot of things iDon’t understand– how to operate a rocket ship for instance, or how a happily married man of 30 years could bring himself to cheat on his entire family. Things that iGuess lots of people don’t understand. Only, today, this one popped into my head when someone on that endless (and perfectly monstrous) Facebook feed linked me to a site full of nifty quotations. You know the kind I mean. This kind…

Now iCan see why these things are all the rage. It’s like little pearls or pills of wisdom! You keep clicking and you keep getting advice about how you should really live this dull life of yours. How to spice it up or settle it down or send it into a spiral of psychedelic craziness. What iDon’t understand is how people can love this and then completely refute something like a Holy book. It’s the same thing, isn’t it? Shorter maybe and definitely prettier than black-on-white but essentially it’s one thing after another… telling you how to live. Telling you what your life ought to be. “Don’t give a damn what other people think” or “Never miss a chance or dance” or (and this is my personal favourite) “Quit your job, buy a ticket, get a tan, fall in love, never return.”

Not all of it is serious advice and not all of it is particularly witty. Lots of people don’t really believe in God anymore and iWonder if this absence of faith has kind of been filled in with things like this. Maybe human beings just like being told what to do sometimes and maybe that’s why we like telling other people what to do. iDon’t know. It bothers me a little because it’s just slabs of very disjointed poetry pasted together to create a life philosophy. As if something so simple could tell you everything about Life, which is pretty damn complicated. I’ll stick to my Holy book for now.

Oh! And thanks to everyone who offered to take those books off of my hands! I appreciated it.

Now. Go Reading Something.
